Teen Sexual Behaviors: Issues and Concerns | Red Rock Canyon School

Parents have to deal with the consequences of their teens being bombarded with a million of sexual inuendos. Sexual connotations and sexually charged behaviors are found everywhere. The clothing that they wear, the movies they watch, the music they listen to are all super charged with sexual connotations. The internet on its own is a completely different realm because it seems impossible to escape sexual situations.

How are teens affected

• Clothing: Teens are wearing clothing that leaves very little to the imagination. Skirts are worn really short and shirts are labeled with sexual inuendos. Abercrombie and Fitch marketed a line of underwear for 10 year old girls full of various labels such as "wink wink" "eye candi". A 10 year old girl shouldn't be wearing things with words they cannot spell let alone define it.

• Movies/TV: Television shows geared toward teenagers now are filled with inappropriate contents. Television shows glamorized sex and sexual issues. Television shows like "16 and Pregnant" capitalize on teens poor decisions and turn it into a reality sensation that sends the message to teens that behaving poorly will lend them on TV.

• Music: The songs on the radio are filled with explicit lyrics. Some music videos are so filled with sexual situations that they should be considered R rated and not shown on TV. Jennifer Lopez jut had feature song with a music video that should be considered inappropriate for kids. Nicki Minaj's music videos are full of sexual moments and situation but to make matter worst, two young girls became a web sensation for knowing and singing her song.

• Internet: The internet is the ultimate sexual vehicles. Teens can view pornography, explicit videos and chat with complete strangers about sex. In the television show "To Catch a Predator" Adults in chat rooms are soliciting sexual offers from minors on an hourly basis.

Misconceptions

• All teens are having sex.

• Sex makes you an adult.

• You are uncool if you graduate high school as a virgin.

  Oral Sex and Anal Sex doesn't count- it's not sex

Talk to your teen and be open with them otherwise they will receive the wrong information from the wrong person.

Sex education classes are proven to be ineffective, Parents should take it upon themselves to be vigilant but also to supplement the information missing from those classes. Parent should also be honest with their teens about sex and the reality of sex. Parent should also lay down the rules about what they expect from their teens and be firm on it. Parent should keep younger kids from being exposed to adult contents too early. Parents should seek guidance should the problem become out their control. Red Rock Canyon School is a residential facility that can help parent with their out of control teens. Typically, there is a deeper emotional issue with teens acting out sexually.
